DragonScales: The Story of Archmage Cedric
This is the background story for the Archmage Cedric of the DragonScales games. If you have not played DragonScales 3 or DragonScales 5 yet, the following text contains several spoilers. All the art of DragonScales was created by our artist XKlibur: check her portfolio here.
The Archmage Cedric was one of the most powerful mages of the Gravity Kingdom. His command of the DragonScales magic was sublime, and that raised him to great glory and fame. Other mages of the kingdom respected and even feared him. In a sense, the Archmage Cedric was the epitome of success in sorcery and he achieved all he ever dreamt of. Once these men achieve all the things they want, their ambition grows even bigger, and they start bordering madness. This occured to Archmage Cedric. Suddenly, he started regretting his human condition, pitying himself for the weaknesses of his mortal vessel, the ugliness of pain, and then yearned for the absolute immutability of his body: he wanted to become an immortal.
During a trip to the west boundaries of the Gravity Kingdom, he met a dark sorceress: Lady Siniestra. Her spells were wicked and powerful. At first, he disliked that woman and her meaningless evil. However, little by little, their relation grew closer as the Archmage Cedric noticed that Lady Siniestra would willingly follow his orders and also shared a consuming lust for eternity. He knew of a way. A long, long time ago, men fighted against dragons and other beings. Those were battles to death, and men slowly started to win most of such clashes. Except for battles against Specktr, an immortal creature, whose worshippers were also granted the gift of immortality. Specktr hated humans. He hated dragons too, except for his toy dragon. He even hated his worshippers and removed their immortality, killing them on the spot, once they stopped being useful. He was the ultimate embodiment of darkness. Humans stood no chance until the council of mages devised a spell to banish him. That spell led humans to victory and set the cornerstone for the foundation of the Gravity Kingdom.
But the Archmage Cedric knew that such spell had a weakness. Specktr was not killed, only banished from the human world. It was possible to bring Specktr back. And he had devised a ritual for doing so. In DragonScales 3, however, his plans are spoiled by a powerful DragonScales magician, and he and Lady Siniestra end up trapped into a magical illusion maze. In DragonScales 5, the Dark Empress releases them and orders he and Siniestra to kill Zarya. He’s eventually defeated again. He discovered, too late, that the Empress and her minions were cruel beyond insanity.
Regardless of the heights a DragonScales mage reaches, she must never give up her humility. Accepting oneself, including one’s weaknesses and limitations is a definitive sign of true power.
